not while riding, but last year at columbia, MO they had really tall barriers at the bottom and top of this short little climb. I tripped over the top one and face planted with my bike. Great time

IMO SAG stops are always fantastic! It's more about the volunteers giving their time to help sweaty MAMILs not completely fall apart between the stops. I don't typically stop as most rides can be done on 3ish bottles which i can pack on me.

The simple answer is there's a lot more people interested in coaching football/basketball/baseball, there is just less people in the area to coach MTB rides.
More bike infrastructure, bike rentals (especially in the vienna/tunnel hill area), people organizing/attending group rides for newer riders/people not wanting to ride 20+ mph. My wife leads the C group from BS-carterville, and that group is regularly growing with new riders. She and Trish work...
Those are NICA teams. There has been talks of trying to get a NICA team here in southern illinois. The problem is population in the area is too low. Lot's of our youths go ride for either SEMO mudcats or McCracken.
Welcome Jerry. There are a few groups that ride out of Mt Vernon. I'm from a bit further south, so i've never ridden with them, but i'm sure someone here will have some insight!
