Do you use a chamois lubricant?

Don't have to reapply but I rarely ride over 30 miles on the road. I do not use if I already have skin irritation.

    A Dirty Triathlon?

I would participate in a bike/kayak dual event. Doesn't matter if the bike is road, mtb or gravel.

    Mountain Biking in the Summer

Insect spray and clear or yellow-lensed glasses are my go-to for MTB.

Do you use a chamois lubricant?

I use baby powder on my skin under spandex, Chamois butter on my skin only, or Barrier Balm if need the greatest protection or already chafed.

Take it to a mechanic or DIY?

lol, yea Gabe is a good guy. Do any gear adjustments, chain issues, tire and tube issues myself. Prefer to have an expert true my wheels or solve a problem I cannot figure out. Also bleeding disc brakes--don't do myself.

Training for the Next Big Race in Southern Illinois

Just raced the Tour Von Brats in Highland, 28 mile road race. Podiumed in my age group. Training--get out there 3 to 4 days a week for at least an hour and do intervals every other ride. Get sufficient protein. Know your limitations. Group ride each week for comfort in pace line and next to...

Is Southern Illinois missing out on organized rides?

The omnium you refer to was the Great Egyptian Omnium which I raced. Road race was in Creel Springs. Logan college was a great crit course. Yes, it was fun and a good weekend event, but no spectators. I don't understand why cycling races always focus on greater distances the more advanced...

    Electronic everything...

Well, after riding gravel in Arkansas the last week, I retract my statement of preferring rim brakes. I will keep that for road bikes, but for gravel and mtb, I prefer disc brakes now. We went down some large gravel incredibly steep hills with tight turns, sometimes going at fast speeds, and...

What cycling gear did you buy last?

Tired of my team and club jerseys and shorts. Just bought several casual jerseys for road and MTB, and some casual shorts for MTB, all twenty to thirty dollars on Amazon. Cycling clothes are so expensive so yes, unfortunately a few of these are made in China.

    Chain Oil

What does everyone use? I hate the sticky stuff that collects dirt and dust. My favorite is Dupont Chain Saver wax based lube with Teflon. Non stick, quiet and stays on for a good while. Chain stays looking new on road bike. MTB, just hose off mud then spray it on. Cans don't stop working...

Do you intentionally ride/train in the rain?

I avoid the rain. Gotten stuck on group rides in it and spoiled the fun. After a good hip road rash going over a sewer grate on a corner in a crit during the rain I learned quickly to watch for those as they are slick. Reduce speed in corners, and lower tire pressure for better grip. Rain...

What's the fastest you've ever rode on your bike?

Cool. One of my favorite rides was climbing, then going down the long winding road outside of Aspen on Maroon Bells. We would slingshot each other at high speeds. Crazy.

What all bikes do you have and what's next on the list?

I just got my first E-bike. Aventon Ramblas MTB. Wanted it for long gravel rides or going up impossible hills that only motorcycles could climb. Will let you know how it goes. Not replacing my Kawasaki KLX 300 or Specialized Stumpjumper Evo! Just another option.

    What type of portable pump?

Agree, if you don't arrive early, stress stinks and you may forget something. Worst part of cycling is it takes much more prep time and after ride down-time than running.
