Welcome back to the sport! I ride around Carterville a lot as the roads are pretty flat. There is always of course the refuge (5.4km flat roads), just south of the Bike Surgeon Southern Illinois or you can do one of my favorite routes for a bit more mileage:
Then of course there is always options for the group rides that are around.
Wednesday Night: 6PM road ride around lumpy terrain starting at MDH, 6PM MTB ride at touch of nature
Thursday Night: 630PM race simulation at Community of Faith Church in Marion (148 and 13)
Saturday Morning Ride: A/B (30/40 mile route) 8AM, C (15 miles at refuge) 9AM Expected to be done around 10-1030AM depending on route.
When I ride in that area, I love riding the Auto-Loop in Crab Orchard. A General Dynamics Ordinance facility is in the middle of it, but the roads are public.
I also enjoyed riding at Giant City for the low traffic and hills. There are some pretty challenging hills over there including the Smiley Face Water Tower Hill from Makanda boardwalk to RT-51. The "wall" is the most challenging which is from the boardwalk and up south Church. That took me around 4 years to finally ride up without stopping LOL
